Germany Expels Head of Banned Muslim Association

Germany has informed the head of the recently outlawed Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH) that he is being expelled from the country and given two weeks to leave, authorities in Hamburg said Thursday (29/8). Hamburg's home affairs office said in a statement that it had informed Mohammad Hadi Mofatteh that he had until September 11 to leave or face deportation. Mofatteh has been head of IZH since the summer of 2018, the statement said. He did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment sent via social media. According to findings by Hamburg's domestic intelligence service, he is the official deputy of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and has been in Germany as head of IZH until now. The Bild newspaper and the NDR broadcaster were the first to report the expulsion order. Social media accounts linked to IZH and its websites have been closed in Germany after the country banned IZH and its affiliated organizations in July for “pursuing radical Islamist goals,” according to the federal interior ministry.
