Germany Tightens Security, Asylum Policies After Deadly Stabbing Attack

Germany's coalition government agreed Thursday to tighten security and asylum policies after a deadly stabbing attack linked to the Islamic State militant group that sparked opposition from far-right groups and criticism of Berlin's migration policy approach. Three people were killed and eight injured in the attack which took place at a festival marking the 650th anniversary of Solingen. The incident escalates a political row over asylum and deportation rules ahead of state elections next month because the suspect is a Syrian whose asylum claim was rejected. The package introduces stricter regulations on weapons, including stricter gun ownership rules, a general ban on daggers, and an absolute ban on knives at public events such as folk festivals, sporting events and trade fairs. Federal law enforcement officers would be authorized to use tasers, and background checks for gun licenses would include new federal agencies to prevent extremists from getting guns. Berlin will also tighten asylum laws and residence permit procedures, including lowering the threshold for “serious deportation,” when deportees commit crimes involving weapons or dangerous devices.
