Indonesia Captures Former Mayor on the Run from the Philippines

Authorities in Manila, Philippines, said Wednesday (4/9) that Indonesian authorities have arrested a fugitive former mayor in the Philippines accused of having ties to a Chinese crime syndicate and laundering more than 100 million pesos (about 27.4 billion rupiah). Alice Guo, also known as Chinese national Guo Hua Ping, is wanted by the Philippine Senate for refusing to appear in a congressional investigation into alleged criminal ties. Guo, who says he is a native Filipino citizen, denied the allegations, calling them “malicious.” “Our colleagues at immigration… have confirmed that Guo is currently in the custody of the Indonesian police,” the Philippine Department of Justice said in a statement. The case comes at a time of growing suspicion in the Philippines about China's activities, amid rising tensions over the two countries' claims in busy waterways in the South China Sea.
