US Condemns Arrest Warrant for Venezuelan Opposition Figure, Warns of Further Pressure

The United States on Tuesday condemned an arrest warrant issued for Venezuela's opposition presidential candidate and warned of further action against President Nicolas Maduro after his plane was seized. U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the United States and its allies condemned the “unjustified arrest warrant” for Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who has declared himself the winner of July’s presidential election, an election that has been criticized internationally for irregularities. “This is just another example of Maduro’s attempts to maintain power through violence,” Kirby told reporters. The United States, which has been pressing Venezuelan authorities to release detailed vote counts, on Monday (2/9) seized Maduro's plane in the Dominican Republic. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the U.S. would continue to take action against Maduro for actions that “long predate his latest anti-democratic actions.” “There are a number of things we are asking him to do, to stop cracking down on dissent, to release the actual vote tally sheets, which he has not done, and to get Venezuela back on the path to democracy,” Miller said. “He has not shown the willingness to do so, and so, in coordination with our partners, we are considering a range of options …
