China, Tanzania, Zambia Sign Initial Deal on Key Railway Project

China, Tanzania and Zambia signed a preliminary agreement to rehabilitate a decades-old railway line to boost rail-sea transport in resource-rich East Africa, Chinese state media reported Wednesday (4/9). President Xi Jinping witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on the improvement of a 1,860 km railway line operated by the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority/TAZARA) along 1,860 km (1,156 miles) together with the Presidents of Tanzania and Zambia. News agency Xinhua The state-run China Daily reported that the leaders of the three countries were in Beijing to attend the China-Africa Cooperation Forum. The single-track TAZARA railway was built between 1970 and 1975 with an interest-free loan from China. It serves as a cargo transport route from Zambia's copper and cobalt mines to the sea on the Tanzanian coast, passing through South Africa and the former state of Rhodesia. Commercial operation of the line, which was at the time derided by some Western countries as the “bamboo railway,” began in 1976.
