India's Opposition Parties Appoint LGBTQ+ Activists to Key Positions

NEW DELHI — India’s main opposition Congress party this week formed a new internal group to promote LGBTQ+ rights, while another party has appointed someone from the community as its spokesperson, the first such political acknowledgment after a series of setbacks for LGBTQ+ rights. The country’s top court in 2018 decriminalized homosexuality, but last year refused to legalize same-sex marriage, leaving the decision to parliament. The decision was a major upset for the LGBTQ+ community. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has also said the legislature is the right platform to decide on this contentious issue, and this week invited the public to share their views on how best to ensure that policies for the people are inclusive and effective. Same-sex relationships are largely taboo in the conservative-majority nation of 1.42 billion people, and the government told the Supreme Court last year that such marriages were not “identical to the Indian concept of a family unit consisting of husband, wife and children”. The Congress, whose political clout has increased after its much better-than-expected performance in the April-June general elections, this week appointed LGBTQ+ activist Mario da Penha as the new unit chief for the community under its All India Professional Congress …
