This Year's Summer Air Temperatures Break Records

The summer of 2024 was the hottest on record on Earth, making it increasingly likely to be the warmest year ever measured by humans, the European climate service Copernicus reported Friday. And if this sounds familiar, it’s because the world record was just broken last year when human-caused climate change, which scientists say was fueled by El Nino, has been driving up temperatures and extreme weather. The Northern Hemisphere’s meteorological summer — June, July and August — averaged 16.8 degrees Celsius (62.24 degrees Fahrenheit), according to Copernicus. That’s 0.03 degrees Celsius (0.05 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the old record for 2023. Copernicus’s record goes back to 1940, but American, British and Japanese records, which go back to the mid-19th century, show the last decade was the warmest since regular measurements were made and possibly in about 120,000 years, some scientists say.
