Zelenskyy Stresses Need to Maintain Military Power

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday (6/9) called on his country's military allies to increase their weapons, underscoring the need for Ukraine to maintain its military strength as Russia seeks to occupy more of its territory. Zelenskyy made his comments at Germany’s Ramstein Air Base at the 24th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG). The U.S.-led group of about 50 countries is designed to coordinate military support for Kyiv in its fight against the Russian invasion. It was the first time Zelenskyy has addressed the group directly. Zelenskyy again urged the group to improve its air defense capabilities, as well as permission to use long-range weapons supplied by the United States to strike targets in Russia and parts of Russia-occupied Ukraine. Ukraine has been hit by a wave of drone and missile attacks in recent weeks, and Zelenskyy said the need for additional air defense systems was clear.
