Footage Indicates Deicer Failure Caused Brazil Plane Crash

Sao Paolo, Brazil — The pilot of a Brazilian passenger plane that crashed last month, killing all 62 people on board, reported a failure of the plane's de-icing system, according to a preliminary report published Friday by Brazilian authorities. Investigators were careful not to say the system was the cause of the crash, stressing that much work remains to be done. But their report does add weight to aviation experts’ main hypothesis: that the loss of lift was caused by ice forming on the plane’s wings and a failure of the de-icing system. Weather reports from the day of the crash had predicted ice forming in the area where the plane went down. The recording from the cockpit voice recorder included comments from the pilot indicating ice had accumulated and the ice search system was not working, Paulo Froes, an investigator at the air force's air accident investigation and prevention center, told reporters in Brasilia. “There are still many doubts. This accident should not have happened, not under the conditions in which the plane was flying and operating.
