Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes died Friday in Los Angeles at the age of 83, his family said. Mendes is remembered as the musician who introduced the Brazilian music genre, bossa nova, to the international stage in the 1960s. In a statement published on his website, the family said Mendes, who had been suffering from the long-term effects of COVID, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children. As one of the most successful Brazilian artists internationally, Mendes has released over 35 albums, many of which have achieved gold or platinum certification. Mendes has won three Grammy Awards and is an Oscar nominee. He last performed in November 2023 in Paris, London and Barcelona, with all three cities selling out. The family said Mendes left behind “an extraordinary musical legacy spanning more than six decades with a unique sound first introduced through his band 'Brasil 66.'” American musician Herb Alpert, who helped Mendes launch his international career, said on Instagram that Mendes was “an incredibly talented musician who brought Brazilian music in all its forms to the world with grace and joy.” (ah)
