West Bank — A large explosion, followed by a plume of smoke, was seen billowing over the Jenin refugee camp in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Thursday (September 5). The blast came as hundreds of Israeli troops were carrying out their deadliest operation in the West Bank in more than a week since the war on Gaza began. Their focus is the Jenin refugee camp — a stronghold of Palestinian militancy that has grown stronger since Hamas attacks on Israel sparked the war. Israel has carried out a massive offensive it says is aimed at disbanding militant groups and preventing attacks. Palestinians fear the attack will lead to an escalation of the war in Gaza. Israeli military officials said the operation targeting militants in Jenin, Tulkarem and the Al-Faraa refugee camp was necessary to curb recent attacks on Israeli civilians that they said had become more sophisticated and deadly. One Israeli soldier was killed in the operation. The attack on Jenin was also devastating for Palestinian civilians.
