Jakarta — Joyful Catholics filled Jakarta's main stadium on Thursday (5/9) to participate in a Mass led by Pope Francis during his visit to Indonesia. Pope Francis celebrated a joyous afternoon Mass at the humid Gelora Bung Karno stadium before a cheering crowd of about 100,000 as he circled the track in an open-topped popemobile. Earlier in the day, at Jakarta’s iconic Istiqlal Mosque, the Pope presided over an interfaith gathering rich with symbolism and personal touches. The gathering was attended by representatives of Indonesia’s six officially recognized religions: Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Catholicism and Protestantism. The meeting culminated in Pope Francis and the grand imam of Southeast Asia's largest mosque declaring a commitment to combating religiously inspired violence and protecting the environment. They also issued a joint call for interfaith friendship and shared goals that are at the heart of the pope's visit to Indonesia.
