Pakistani Police Detain Several MPs

Islamabad — Members of Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan's party arrive at a court in Islamabad after several lawmakers were detained in a midnight arrest. The arrests came after a major demonstration in the capital demanding Khan's release, the party and police said Tuesday. A police spokesman confirmed the arrest of four individuals but did not provide details of the charges. Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party said nearly a dozen of its lawmakers had been arrested in Islamabad. Others had sought refuge in parliament to evade law enforcement efforts, it said. Party leader Gohar Khan was among those arrested but he was later released. “I and Sher Afzal Marwat were arrested from outside the gate of the lower house of parliament. Shoaib Shaheen was detained in his office. After that, ten of our MPs were detained by masked men from the parliament building. We consider it an attack on parliament,” Gohar Khan said. At a press conference outside the court, he said the arrested lawmakers were still in police custody for eight days.
