West Imposes Sanctions on Iran Over Missile Shipments to Russia

Western nations on Tuesday announced new sanctions on Iran for supplying Russia with short-range missiles for immediate use against Ukraine, calling it a dangerous escalation of the conflict that threatens European security. Britain, France and Germany say they will cut aviation deals with Iran and plan to sanction its national airline, Iran Water. They also claimed that Iran had repeatedly defied warnings regarding the weapons shipment. Britain said the move would “limit the ability of airlines to Iran Water fly to England”. “This is a further escalation of Iran’s military support for Russia’s war, in its aggression against Ukraine and will result in Iranian missiles reaching mainland Europe, increasing the suffering of the Ukrainian people,” the three countries, often referred to as the E3, said. “This action is an escalation by both Iran and Russia, and it constitutes a direct threat to European security,” the three said in a joint statement. In London, visiting US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the US would also impose sanctions on Iran, and that Russia could use Iranian missiles against Ukraine “within weeks”.
