Congo Receives 50,000 Doses of Mpox Vaccine from US

Kinshasa, Congo — The Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday (10/9) received 50,000 additional vaccine doses from the United States to fight the mpox epidemic in the country. The amount is in addition to about 200,000 doses donated by the European Union. Congo is the epicentre of the latest outbreak and has recorded more than 21,500 cases and more than 700 deaths, according to the public health agency in charge of dealing with the epidemic in the country. “The US donation of 50,000 doses of mpox vaccine arrived today in Congo,” US ambassador to Congo Lucy Tamlyn tweeted on X on Tuesday. An additional 15,000 doses were delivered on the same plane from the Gavi Vaccine Alliance, the health agency said. On Sunday, about 100,000 vaccines donated by the European Union arrived in the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, public health agencies and the Africa CDC confirmed. Congo received its first shipment of donated vaccines from the European Union on Thursday, bringing the total number of vaccines donated to Congo to 265,000 doses.
