IAEA Chief Hopes to Talk to Iranian President Soon

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said Monday (9/9) he hopes to hold talks with Iran's new President Masoud Pezeshkian by November to improve cooperation between Iran and his agency. Several long-standing issues have plagued relations between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including Iran's ban on uranium enrichment experts on inspection teams, and its failure for years to explain traces of uranium found at undeclared locations. “He (Pezeshkian) agreed to meet me at an appropriate time,” Grossi said in remarks at the quarterly meeting of his institution's 35-member Board of Governors, referring to an exchange of views after Pezeshkian's election in July. With nuclear diplomacy largely stalled between Iran's presidential election and the US election on November 5, Grossi said he wanted to make real progress soon. An IAEA board resolution ordering Iran to immediately cooperate with a uranium trace investigation and calling for a lifting of a ban on its inspectors did not bring much change, according to an IAEA quarterly report seen by the news agency.
