Colombia to be deadliest country for environmental activists in 2023

Colombia, the host country of this year's United Nations biodiversity conference (COP16), was the deadliest country for environmental activists and land rights defenders in 2023, with 79 environmental activists killed in the country in 2023, according to British advocacy group Global Witness. The number of environmental activists killed was the highest number Global Witness has ever recorded for a single country in a single year since the organization began tracking activist killings in 2012, the organization's annual report released Monday said. “The numbers are absolutely horrific,” said Laura Furones, senior adviser to land and environmental campaigner Global Witness, adding that the report’s findings were conservative and the figures were likely incomplete. Globally, 196 environmental and land activists were killed in 2023, Global Witness said, with Latin America leading the percentage with the highest number of killings at 85%. The findings in Colombia stand in stark contrast to the promises of the government of President Gustavo Petro, who took office in 2022 and has promised to end the country's 60-year conflict and pursue environmental justice for communities.
