US Citizens Could Lose $5.6 Billion in 2023 Due to Crypto Fraud Schemes

Americans were defrauded of more than $5.6 billion in 2023 through fraud schemes involving cryptocurrencies, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in a report released Monday (September 9). The total losses were 45% higher than those recorded in 2022. The FBI received nearly 70,000 complaints in 2023 from victims of financial fraud involving bitcoin, etherand a number of other cryptocurrencies. The most prevalent scheme was an investment scam, which resulted in losses of $3.96 billion. “The decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies, the speed of irreversible transactions, and the ability to transfer value around the world make them an attractive vehicle for criminals, while also creating challenges in recovering stolen funds,” wrote Michael Nordwall, assistant director of the FBI’s criminal investigation division. Scammers will often make contact through dating apps or social media to build trust over weeks or months before suggesting cryptocurrency investments, the FBI said. Once a relationship is established, they convince targets to use the fake website or app to invest their money, sometimes even allowing victims to withdraw small amounts at first to make it seem legitimate.
