Thousands of French protested on Saturday against President Emmanuel Macron's decision to appoint centre-right politician Michel Barnier as his new prime minister. The parties of the left have accused the French president of stealing the parliamentary elections. President Macron on Thursday appointed Mr Barnier, a conservative and former EU Brexit negotiator, as France's new prime minister after two months of political chaos following snap elections that elected a parliament divided into three blocs. In his first interview as prime minister on Friday evening, Mr Barnier said his government, which does not have a clear majority, would include conservatives, members of President Macron's camp and hoped for some representatives from the left. The left-wing bloc, led by the far-left Inflexible France (LFI) party, has accused President Macron of stealing the election after refusing to nominate as prime minister a candidate from the New Popular Front, the coalition that came first in the election.
