SpaceX Plans to Launch Unmanned Starship to Mars in Two Years

SpaceX plans to launch its first unmanned Starship spacecraft to Mars in two years, when the Earth-Mars orbit is considered closest at that time, CEO Elon Musk revealed the plan in a post on the X social media platform on Saturday (7/9). “This will be an uncrewed mission to test the reliability of landing on Mars,” Musk said, adding that if the landing is successful, SpaceX will send its first crewed mission to Mars in four years. “The flight rate will increase rapidly after that, with the target of building a self-sufficient city in about 20 years,” said the billionaire. In April, Musk, who founded SpaceX in 2002, said the first unmanned spacecraft would land on Mars within five years, followed by the first human landing in seven years. In June, the Starship rocket successfully completed a thrilling hypersonic journey and made an impressive landing in the Indian Ocean, completing a global test on its fourth try. Musk hopes Starship will fulfill his dream of a large, versatile next-generation spacecraft that could send humans and cargo to the moon by the end of the decade and eventually to Mars. (ah/ft)
