Fleeing to Spain, Former Opposition Presidential Candidate Shatters Venezuelan People's Hopes for Change

Venezuela’s former opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González has fled into exile after being granted asylum in Spain, a major blow to millions who had pinned their hopes on his early campaign to end two decades of one-party rule. The shock departure of González, who was considered by Venezuela's opposition and some foreign countries to be the legitimate winner of last July's presidential election, was announced Saturday evening by Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez. Rodriguez said the government decided to grant González permission to leave Venezuela, just days after ordering his arrest, to help restore “peace and political calm in the country.” Neither González nor opposition leader Maria Corina Machado have commented. Spain's center-left government said the decision to leave Venezuela was González's own and that he left on a plane sent by the Spanish Air Force. Never Leave the Opposition Leader Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares told Spain's national broadcaster, RTVEthat his government would grant González political asylum in accordance with his request.
