WHO Chief Calls for More Attention, Resources to Solve Sudan Crisis

World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Sunday (8/9) lamented the lack of global attention to the crisis in Sudan. He conveyed this during a visit to the East African country. Tedros said the scale of the crisis was “shocking” and that measures to address the conflict and alleviate the suffering of Sudanese people were “inadequate.” Tedros further said that with more than ten million people displaced, Sudan has the largest number of refugees in a single country in the world. This does not include the 25 million people – or more than half the population – who are dependent on humanitarian assistance. “This means additional resources are needed to meet their needs,” he said at a press conference. “And we call on the world to wake up and help Sudan get out of the nightmare it is experiencing,” he said. Tedros called for an immediate ceasefire to achieve a lasting political solution to the conflict. He also called for better protection of health facilities and safe access to aid supplies to expand vaccination programs. “If we do this, we will save millions of lives, especially children and women, who are currently living on the edge,” he said. …
