Pope Francis Arrives in Timor Leste, Estimated 750,000 People Attend Mass

Pope Francis arrived Monday in East Timor for a three-day visit. During his visit to the predominantly Catholic country, the pope will lead an outdoor mass that the Vatican said will be attended by more than half of the country's population of 1.3 million. The 87-year-old pope is on an ambitious 12-day visit to four countries in Southeast Asia and Oceania, making it his longest overseas trip ever. He arrived in East Timor after concluding his visit to Papua New Guinea. The pope on Sunday (8/9) delivered aid in the form of medical supplies to a small town on the edge of dense jungle in Papua New Guinea, which is in one of the most remote areas in the world. The pope landed in Dili, the capital of East Timor, on Monday afternoon (9/9). He was greeted at the airport by President Jose Manuel Ramos-Horta and two young women in traditional dress, who presented him with flowers and a tais, a woven ceremonial shawl, which the pope briefly wore.
