Brasilia — Brazil's Supreme Court said Friday that a judge has ordered the transfer of more than $3 million from the accounts of billionaire Elon Musk's companies to pay fines incurred by his social media platform, X. Brazil suspended X's operations some time ago. Judge Alexandre de Moraes last month ordered X to shut down in Brazil after Musk refused to delete dozens of right-wing accounts and then failed to appoint new legal representation in the country as ordered. A brief statement from the court said Moraes had “established the transfer to the state treasury of 18.35 million reais ($3.28 million), blocked in the accounts” of X and satellite internet company Starlink, both owned by Musk. Moraes has repeatedly clashed with the South African-born billionaire over his mission to crack down on disinformation. He also froze X and Starlink assets to ensure payment of fines imposed on X for failing to comply with court orders. In Brazil, Starlink has been operating since 2022, mainly in remote communities in the Amazon. The social media platform formerly known as Twitter has more than 22 million users in Brazil.
