President Biden's administration notified Congress on Wednesday that the United States will provide Egypt with $1.3 billion in military aid, a State Department spokesman said. This is the first time since 2020 that Egypt will receive the full amount of annual aid from the United States, despite Cairo's failure to meet human rights conditions. The announcement comes amid Washington's reliance on officials in Egypt, a longtime US ally, to mediate talks between Israel and Hamas. Of the $1.3 billion in annual US military aid to Egypt, $320 million has been blocked in recent years because Cairo failed to meet human rights obligations.
