In Albania, the former prime minister and chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, was today charged with corruption, brought against him by the Special Prosecutor's Office, for the case of the privatization of the former Partizani sports club in Tirana. Under house arrest since December, he appeared today before the prosecutors, while outside the building democratic deputies and sympathizers of the opposition gathered in solidarity with him. Mr. Berisha considers himself a political prisoner. He repeated today the accusations against the Special Prosecutor's Office, which is acting according to him, based on the political orders of Prime Minister Rama, and that there is no evidence or fact against him. Today was the second time, since January, that Mr. Berisha left his apartment, where he is under “house arrest”, after he refused to comply with the security measure imposed by the court in October of last year.
