Government Must Restore Soekarno's Name

JAKARTA — MPR Chairman Bambang Soesatyo along with nine other MPR leaders handed over the MPR leadership letter regarding the revocation of TAP MPRS Number 33/MPRS/1967 to the family of Soekarno, the proclaimer and first president of the Republic of Indonesia. The MPR Leadership Letter is a response to the Letter of the Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia regarding the Follow-up to the Invalidity of TAP MPRS Number XXXIII/MPRS/1967 which is in accordance with TAP MPR Number I of 2003. In TAP MPR No.1 it is stated that TAP MPRS No. 33 of 1967 concerning the transfer of power from President Soekarno to President Soeharto is no longer valid and final. However, this is still a problem because the considerations in the TAP MPRS which stated that Soekarno helped the G30S PKI movement were not explicitly stated as to whether or not it was revoked. Bambang explained that through the letter, the MPR leadership emphasized that legally the accusations against President Soekarno who was considered to have provided policies that supported the rebellion and betrayal of the G-30-S/PKI in 1965, were declared no longer valid according to MPR Decree Number I/MPR/2003 concerning the Review …
