The World Health Organization (WHO) said Thursday (12/9) it evacuated nearly 100 people from the Gaza Strip to the United Arab Emirates, and called for a regular and sustainable system of medical transfers to help thousands of people in need of treatment. “Gaza needs medical corridors,” Richard Peeperkorn, WHO representative to the occupied Palestinian territories, told reporters. “We need a more organized and sustainable system.” He added that there are 10,000 people in Gaza awaiting medical transfers. WHO: Quarter of Injured Victims Need Permanent Rehabilitation Services The WHO also released a report saying a quarter of those injured in the Gaza war in late July “are estimated to have sustained life-changing injuries that will require rehabilitation services now and in the years to come.” Severe limb injuries are the main need for rehabilitation, while the number of spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries and severe burns has also increased significantly, the WHO said. Among the injured are “thousands of women and children.” WHO also highlighted the increasing challenges in providing necessary care due to insecurity, lack of supplies, attacks and evacuation orders that have left many medical facilities unable to function.
