China Reaffirms ‘Non-Interference’ Policy After New Zealand Allegations

China on Tuesday (3/9) reaffirmed its commitment not to interfere in other countries' internal affairs after New Zealand accused Beijing of interfering through cyber activities. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said, “China is committed to building relations with other countries based on the principle of mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs. “We never interfere in other countries' internal affairs. We hope New Zealand will uphold a rational and objective understanding of China and create good conditions for the development of healthy and stable relations between China and New Zealand,” he said. In an annual report published on Tuesday, the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service, or NZSIS, said “China represents a complex intelligence concern” for New Zealand. The report outlined the security risks facing the country, also saying other countries were involved in malign interference activities in New Zealand. “We never interfere in any country’s internal affairs,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said when asked about the remarks at a daily briefing.
