Facing Western Obstacles, China Pushes Eco-Friendly Products at Africa Summit

The FOCAC summit is held every three years. This year's summit is the first since China reopened after the pandemic and economic slowdown. The leaders' meeting also comes amid heightened geopolitical rivalry between Beijing and Western countries. Cliff Mboya, an analyst at the Pretoria-based China Global South Project, said: “As global power competition intensifies and we see a widening gap between China, the US and the West, we expect that in this forum China will try and consolidate its ideological and political alliance with the continent.” Chinese officials have promised that green energy will be one of the topics of discussion at a summit in Beijing that begins on September 4. China is the world's largest producer of solar panels, and this year accounted for three-quarters of global investment in overall manufacturing of the green technology, according to data from the International Energy Agency.However, China has been overproducing and is now facing a mismatch between supply and demand for the excess product. The US and the EU, looking to protect their manufacturing and jobs, have implemented protectionist trade policies and raised tariffs on Chinese products including electric vehicles, batteries, solar panels and critical minerals.
