Typhoon Approaches, Toyota Halts Production at All Plants in Japan

Auto giant Toyota is halting production at all its plants in Japan due to a typhoon that is set to hit the country, the company said on Wednesday (8/28). “From the second shift (at noon today) to the first shift tomorrow, we will stop production lines at all domestic plants,” a Toyota spokesman told AFP. About 28 production lines at the company's 14 factories will cease operations from Wednesday afternoon. One line at Hino Motors' truck manufacturing division will resume operations on Thursday (Aug. 29) morning, the spokesman added. The decision came as “very strong” Typhoon Shanshan moved closer to southern Japan, bringing winds of up to 252 kilometers per hour and heavy rain. The typhoon is expected to move over or near Japan towards its northeastern region by the end of this week. Toyota, the world's largest automaker, does not say how many vehicles it produces domestically each day. (rs)
