EU Commissioner Resigns After Criticism of European Commission Chief

An influential member of the European Union's executive branch, Thierry Breton, resigned on Monday (16/9) after criticizing the leadership of European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen just as she was trying to put together a new team for the next five years. Breton, a French business executive and commissioner for the European Union’s vast internal market who recently clashed with tech billionaire Elon Musk, said von der Leyen had acted in secret to appoint another French official as her replacement for the next commission. In a post on social media platform X containing his resignation letter to top EU officials, Breton said von der Leyen's move “increasingly shows poor governance. I must declare that I can no longer carry out my duties in this institution.” The commission proposes laws for the 27 EU member states and ensures that rules covering the world's largest trading bloc are followed. It is made up of a Board of Commissioners with positions similar to government ministers, including agriculture, economy, competition, security or migration policy.
