Pagers Explode Simultaneously, Dozens Injured in Lebanon

Dozens of people in the Beirut suburbs and other parts of Lebanon were injured after their mobile pagers exploded simultaneously on Tuesday, Lebanese state media and security officials said. A pager is an electronic device that is typically used by a person to receive messages, and alerts the user with a beep or vibration. A senior military intelligence official and an official from a Lebanese group familiar with the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said the pagers that exploded were used by Hezbollah members. The second official said the attack was believed to be Israeli. The state-run National News Agency reported that in Beirut's southern suburbs and other areas “handheld pager systems were detonated using advanced technology, and dozens were injured.” It was not immediately clear if anyone was killed in the incident. A Hezbollah official said at least 150 people, including members of the group, were wounded in various parts of Lebanon when the pagers they were carrying exploded.
