Loud, smelly, shy and the winner of this year's bird contest in New Zealand. That's the hoiho, a type of yellow-eyed penguin. The Hoiho won a hotly contested bird election in the country on Monday, giving advocates of the endangered bird hope that recognition could lead to a revival of the species. This year’s Bird of Prey campaign was held without the foreign interference scandals and rigging controversies of previous elections. Instead, campaigners of the long-running contest sought votes in the usual ways, such as launching meme wars, seeking celebrity endorsements and even getting tattoos as a sign of their loyalty. More than 50,000 people took part in the poll, 300,000 fewer than last year. Back then, British presenter John Oliver ran a humorous campaign for the pūteketeke, calling it a “very strange bird” because it eats and vomits its own feathers. And it turned out to be a landslide victory. This year, the number of votes cast was equivalent to 1 percent of New Zealand’s population — a country known for its preserved natural environment and where a love of native birds is instilled in its citizens from an early age.
