Pope Francis Condemns Deaths of Gaza Children from Israeli Bombings

Pope Francis on Friday condemned the deaths of Palestinian children in Israel's military offensive in Gaza, calling the bombing of a school in an apparent attempt to attack Hamas militants “egregious.” On the flight back to Rome from Singapore, the pope expressed doubt that Israel or Hamas, which has been fighting for 11 months, were really trying to end the conflict. “I regret to say this,” he said. “But I do not believe they are taking steps towards peace.” The pope spoke at a news conference with reporters after completing a grueling 12-day tour of Southeast Asia and Oceania. He said he had been in telephone contact with Catholic parishioners in Gaza “every day,” and they had told him of their difficulties and plight.
