Missiles from Yemen Fall in Central Israel

The Israeli military said a missile fired from Yemen crossed over central Israel on Sunday (15/9) and “fell in an open area”. The military said that “a surface-to-surface missile was detected crossing central Israel from the east and fell in an open area. There were no reports of deaths or injuries. “The missile was fired from Yemen,” the military said in a statement. “The explosions heard in the last few minutes came from an interceptor. The results of the interception are being evaluated.” Yemen's Houthi rebels launched attacks on Israel and its interests in solidarity with Palestine. The attacks came amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The rebels are part of Iran's so-called “axis of resistance,” which includes Tehran-backed militant groups in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. Since November, the Houthis have launched a series of missile and drone attacks on Israeli-linked shipping in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. And in July, they carried out a drone strike on Tel Aviv that killed an Israeli civilian. In response, Israeli warplanes bombed Yemen's Houthi-held port of Hodeida. A rebel official vowed to “respond to escalation with escalation.” (ah/ft)
