Through its website, Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISB) claims to be a Malaysian conglomerate that implements an Islamic lifestyle according to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Ironically, GISB has recently been in the spotlight after rescuing hundreds of children who were allegedly victims of sexual abuse in social institutions managed by GISB. If we look back, the company is actually rooted in a religious sect that was banned by the government three decades ago. The GISB acknowledges its connection with the Al-Arqam sect, which was banned in 1994, and names the late ustaz Ashaari Muhammad as its founder. However, GISB strives to keep a distance from the practices and teachings of the sect that is considered heretical by the government. The GISB has said it is not responsible for the management of the homes and denies all allegations of abuse. However, in a video on Facebook, the GISB CEO acknowledged that there had been breaches of the law, although he did not elaborate.
