Fuel Truck Explodes, 16 Dead, 40 Seriously Injured

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Officials say a fuel truck exploded on a road in Haiti's southern peninsula on Saturday, killing at least 16 people and leaving 40 survivors with serious burns. Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille said emergency teams were working to “save the lives of seriously injured victims” after the incident that occurred early morning near the coastal town of Miragoane in the Nippes department. “The government expresses its solidarity with all the victims and their families,” Conille said in a statement posted to his social media. Authorities in Nippes said 16 bodies were burned beyond recognition. An eyewitness to the incident said the truck's gas tank was punctured by another vehicle, and people rushed to the scene to get fuel. “There were a lot of people. Those who were near the truck were crushed,” the unnamed man said in a video interview with local media, Echo Haiti Media. When asked how many people might have died in the blast, he said it was difficult to answer. “It's impossible to know because there are so many people, people watching and people collecting the oil.
