The U.S. State Department said Friday it had approved the sale of dozens of F-35 fighter jets worth $7.2 billion to Romania, its NATO ally. The contract covers Bucharest's purchase of 32 F-35A aircraft and related equipment, manufactured by US aerospace and defense giant Lockheed Martin. However, the agreement still requires approval from the US Congress, “This sale, which is still under bid, will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by enhancing the security of a NATO Ally who is a vital force for political and economic stability in Europe,” the State Department statement said. The contract announcement came as Ukrainian pilots began training this week at a special center in Romania, using F-16s, the American-made fighter jets that Washington has approved for Kyiv to use in its efforts to counter a Russian invasion. Romania has a strategic position at the gateway to Ukraine and the Black Sea, and has ambitions to become an international F-16 training hub. The country inaugurated an F-16 training center at the Fetesti air base in November 2023 and committed to also training Ukrainian pilots at the facility.
