Private Astronauts' Historic Mission Prepares for Ocean Landing

Washington — SpaceX's Polaris Dawn mission, which made history when its crew performed spacewalk The first by a non-government astronaut, will return to Earth on Sunday (15/9). Landing at sea or Splashdown scheduled to occur at approximately 3:36 a.m. Eastern Time (0736 GMT) off the coast of Dry Tortugas, Florida. Webcast will be broadcast live by SpaceX starting about an hour beforehand. The four-person team, led by fintech billionaire Jared Isaacman, launched Tuesday from Kennedy Space Center, quickly traveling farther into the cosmos than any human in half a century as they ventured into the dangerous Van Allen radiation belts. They reached a peak altitude of 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) – three times higher than the International Space Station, and the farthest humans have been from Earth since the Apollo missions to the Moon. Then on Thursday (9/12), with the orbit of their Dragon spacecraft lowered to 434 miles, Isaacman opened the hatch and stepped out into the void.
