Victims' Families Want Boeing to Pay Higher Fines, Have Jury Trial

Families of the 346 people killed in two Boeing Max crashes have asked a federal judge to reject a plea deal proposed by Boeing and the U.S. Justice Department. Instead, the families want the judge to schedule a jury trial for Boeing. Boeing and the Justice Department recently finalized a deal in which Boeing will plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud to resolve allegations that it deceived Federal Aviation Administration regulators into approving the 737 Max and then violated a 2021 settlement that would have spared the company from criminal prosecution. The case against Boeing stems from two crashes of the Boeing 737 Max, in Indonesia in 2018 and in Ethiopia in 2019, and Boeing's misrepresentation of a key software feature involved in both incidents. The decision to accept the deal or take Boeing to court now lies with U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor in Fort Worth, Texas, the news agency reported.
