Wrongly convicted win $120M from cops

CHICAGO — A federal court in Illinois declined to order a new trial, as requested by three police officers who procured a false confession in a murder case, but does amend its final judgment. The jury properly found that several Chicago police officers and officials violated the rights of men convicted for murder in 2003, but whose convictions were vacated in 2019 when the confession was found to be based on an impossible theory of facts. The jury’s $120 million award will stay, but final payments may be adjusted by a $7.45 million set-off because the wrongfully convicted men already settled with the county.
