Fiddler crabs scuttle north as waters warm

Atlantic mangrove fiddler crabs have now been found nearly 200 miles further north from their historic northern limit in Jacksonville, Fla., according to a study published by the College of William & Mary this year. The crab is part of a larger mass movement of tropical species expanding their ranges polewards into more temperate climates, said the study’s lead researcher Valerie Acosta-Rodríguez. One of those species is mangroves, which are limited to tropical, subtropical, and some temperate regions.
