Electricity analysts raise concerns over proposed data center rate plan

Analysts with Wisconsin's utility regulator have raised questions over whether We Energies' proposed energy rate for data center companies will fully prevent cost shifting onto residents and other businesses. The massive energy requirements of AI data center projects coming to southeast Wisconsin are driving up demand for more solar fields, power plants and transmission lines. We Energies filed plans in October 2025 to build more than $5.5 billion in new energy generation, including seven large-scale solar farms and multiple natural gas plants, that will supply power primarily to data center campuses. In the meantime, lawmakers are exploring stricter regulations on data center development....
