Aerogels and the engineering limits of empty space

Aerogels are an advanced class of materials composed of up to 99.8 percent air. They are among the lightest solid materials on Earth, with silica-based aerogels representing some of the most extreme examples. Graphene aerogels, in particular, can reach densities as low as 0.16 kg/m³—about 7.5 times lighter than air. Often called “frozen smoke” or “solid clouds,” aerogels owe these nicknames to their ethereal, semi-transparent appearance and extremely low density. Despite this, they are mechanically resilient for their weight and highly porous, with some variants capable of absorbing up to 900 times their own weight in oil. Aerogels are not a recent invention.
