Scientists Find Key Nutrient That Doubles Forest Regrowth

Researchers found that nitrogen fertilizer nearly doubled tree growth in the youngest recovering forests, which had been used as cattle pasture less than a year earlier. With added nitrogen, tree biomass increased by about 95 percent compared with unfertilized plots. Forests that had been regrowing for roughly 10 years also showed significant benefits, with nitrogen treatment increasing tree growth by nearly 48 percent. The results suggest that...
