Maryland was doused in salt; It’s now heading to waterways

Temperatures are expected to reach the 40s this week, kickstarting the thawing after nearly a foot of snow coated parts of Maryland late last month. Now that all that snow is beginning to melt, concerns are shifting to the salt that was spread both before and after the storm. Salt runoff can contaminate water sources, hurt ecosystems and damage infrastructure. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration said it pours an average of 400,000 tons of salt on its roads every winter. The State Highway Administration sprays around 1.6 million gallons of brine and 100,000 gallons of magnesium chloride on roads before a winter storm, reducing the amount of salt needed after...
