Paris meeting confirms Ukraine deserves ‘peace through strength’ – EU

The emergency meeting of EU leaders in Paris on Monday reaffirmed that Ukraine "deserves peace through strength." European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa made this statement in a joint post on X, according to Ukrinform. "Today in Paris we reaffirmed that Ukraine deserves peace through strength. Peace respectful of its independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, with strong security guarantees," the post reads. The statement also emphasized that Europe carries its full share of the military assistance to Ukraine. "At the same time we need a surge in defense in Europe," the EU leaders added. Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz noted that the informal meeting of several European heads of state and government was held to discuss how to support Ukraine while also enhancing Europe's own security and defense capabilities in light of the current challenges. Earlier reports said that leaders from several EU countries, the UK, NATO, and the EU gathered in Paris on Monday at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron.
