German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul believes Russia’s actions cast doubt on whether Russian leader Vladimir Putin truly seeks a just peace in Ukraine. He said this during a meeting with his Croatian counterpart, Gordan Grlić-Radman, in Zagreb, as quoted by DW. Wadephul urged Putin to hold bilateral talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as soon as possible, warning Moscow of new sanctions. "If President Putin thinks he can just buy time, he is mistaken," Wadephul stated. According to the minister, Russia must continue to face pressure, which is why the European Union is preparing its 19th package of sanctions against Moscow. The German foreign minister stressed that it is now up to Putin to prove that he is truly ready to work toward achieving a just peace in the ongoing war in Ukraine. "After everything we have seen, there are serious doubts about this," he noted, adding that Kyiv has already taken a step forward by agreeing to peace talks without any additional preconditions. At the same time, Wadephul emphasized: "One thing is clear: no negotiations will be conducted behind the backs of Ukrainians. This is our common European promise." German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently stated that diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine still face significant challenges. Most German citizens believe that their chancellor cannot significantly influence the US president on issues related to the war in Ukraine.
