Zelenskyy Discusses Zaporizhzhia NPP Restoration with Trump
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he discussed with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, the possibility of U.S. assistance in restoring the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). He shared this information during a Zoom briefing for journalists. Zelenskyy told Trump that simply de-occupying the plant is not enough, as it requires proper infrastructure. "Water supply, technical personnel, and many other steps are needed so that in about one and a half to two and a half years, the plant can start generating revenue and electricity for the people. This is my vision," he explained. The Ukrainian leader also noted that Trump inquired whether the U.S. could help restore the plant. "Yes, if modernization and investment are possible. This can be discussed, but we talked only about one plant," Zelenskyy commented. In mid-February, the president stated that he had spoken with Trump and his team regarding nuclear energy and the Zaporizhzhia NPP. On March 19, U.S. presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff announced that a new round of peace negotiations on Ukraine would take place on Sunday, March 23, in the Saudi city of Jeddah.
